Merdeka... and muntah.

I am on Facebook, and I see throngs of status updates wishing a Selamat Hari Merdeka Malaysia.

People have changed their profile pictures to flags, or to pictures of them with flags.

All to indicate their love for their country. Their Tanahair. Their Ibu Pertiwi.

As for me, I ask myself what do I feel?

No over the top compulsion to break out into patriotic song.

No compulsion to change profile pictures, to upload pictures of flags.

Nothing.

Why?

I don't know.

Part of me says it's that i'm sick of everything that is happening there. Merdeka slogans that mean nothing at all about achieving Independence? Seriously? The Independence song that has the phrase Kedai 1Malaysia in it?? Seriously??? Why are you trying so hard to push propaganda down people's throats? Why are you so insecure? When are you going to learn that Malaysia is not the same as BN? When are you going to learn that the harder you push something down people's throats the harder they will vomit it out?

And then there's the other camp.

Coming up with a Merdeka slogan just because you don't like the one the Government came up with? Seriously? Having your own Merdeka celebration just because you didn't like how the Government handled their own Merdeka celebration?? Seriously??? You know what that's like? That's like the group of geeks who aren't invited to the cool kids' party and they band together and say "We don't need their lame party. We'll have our own party. We'll show them we don't need them." What's next? Let's create our own National Anthem, because we don't want to have Raja? And then let's create a new flag, which doesn't have the blue in it (I saw those pictures), because they're BN's colour (or something like that)?

Grow up!

Both parties. Acting like spoilt brats. Fighting in the classroom, the rakyat become the dungus, eating glue at the back of the class.

And that's not even touching race issues, which is going to open up a new can of worms. Yes, the Malays are very much afraid of losing their lands rights and becoming like the First Nations of Canada and the US. The land is hereditarily theirs. Get over it. And no, the Chinese and Indians and other races who have become Malaysians are not pendatang. They are citizens, whose forefathers bled for the country as much as yours did. You cannot ask them to "balik negara sendiri" because they are where they belong. Get over it.

What is wrong with you?

Fifty-five years, and you still can't get along?

Does this sound like having acquired Independence?

From what?

Sounds like we're doing a good job maintaining the colonised mentality, even without the British here.

And so, like everyone else who is creating their own Merdeka slogan, I'll make my own.

It's going to go something like this:

55 tahun Merdeka
"Korang tak malu ke?"

Help is always far away

Help is never far away. That is the old adage that has been drummed into us ever since we were young. No matter where you are, and what difficulty you are going through, someone will be close at hand to help. Except they aren't. Many a time no one in your vicinity gives a rat's ass. Or could be in a mess of their own to even think that someone else may need the support. Just that little bit of assurance to show that they care. Sometimes it can be in the smallest things. A kind word. A check up of how one is doing. Yet help does come. Someone takes the time to respond, in short messages, all the way from across the Pacific Ocean. Someone does take the time to relate, and share their own experiences, and offers words of comfort from across the country. Yes, help is at hand, but it is always far away. *picture credit here

The Forbidden Kingdom No More

Yesterday is a day that would forever go down the sands of time as... "The Day I Fed Two Hundred Ravenous Mouths with Bottomless Pits" Oh the horror!... The Pain!... The Suffering!!! Like a swarm of locusts they came, wave upon wave upon wave... Like a farmer protecting his crop I could only look on and stare, as they darkened the sky, before zeroing in for the kill... Tears streamed down my eyes as I watched them strip every last grain of maize and corn that I had planted at the begininning of the year... My knees thudded to the ground, as I numbly watched the carnage around me, my tired brain barely registering what my eyes perceived. "So this is what it feels like"... I thought in my brain... "This thing called Open House" . .. ... Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I'm just being dramatic here ;) Yesterday was actually a day that I'm going to remember for a long time, simply because it was graced with the presence of those eager young minds I he

My nightmare come true

This is it. It's finally happened. The stuff of bad dreams for many language teachers has today materialised for me, rearing its ugly head, scoffing at my abilities as a language professional. This is an actual letter from one of my students as part of their coursework. Final year student. Soon to graduate and meet the workforce of the nation. Read it and weep...
